A Sister’s Christmas Blessing

By Mary

Ring the bells that can still ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in everything

That’s how the light gets in.*

As the sister of a survivor of clergy abuse, I have come to understand how, in the coming weeks, the darkness can seem overwhelming.  Literally, as the hours of light diminish around us and in other ways as well.  But Cohen’s song reminds us—the light gets in, sometimes in spite of us, and often in surprising and unexpected ways.  Those who gave birth to Healing Voices bring in the Light—and in glistening ways.  These Voices invite us to let the bells ring.  For this I am deeply grateful.  Let us hear even the softest of those rings in the midst of darkness, bringing hope and healing.

* From “Anthem,” by Leonard Cohen
